- The First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States is one sentence with 3 commas and 2 semicolons.
- Five distinct privileges are contained in that one sentence (to be discussed later).
- The First Amendment is part of the ‘Bill of Rights’ or the First 10 Amendments to the Constitution.
- The Constitution was proposed by Congress on September 17, 1787, and effective March 4, 1789.
- On September 25, 1789, the Congress sent the first 10 Amendments (plus 2 that were not approved) to the respective State legislatures for ratification.
- The ‘Bill of Rights’, the first 10 Amendments, were ratified on December 15, 1791, by 3/4 of the States.
